The course can be categorized into three phases. The first phase was constructing and refining course contents by a team of ten experts. The course contents comprised of five knowledge domains: (1) marine physics, (2) marine chemistry, (3) coastal and underwater geological systems, (4) marine lives and (5) benefits and effects of marine resource utilization. The second phase involved training of 26 participating teachers who were selected from 18 schools where environmental conservation projects were introduced. This newly developed training program responded to this group of teachers' needs for additional information related to marine sciences. The knowledge gained from this training would be applied into physics, chemistry and biology subjects given by these participating school teachers. The third, and final, stage involved a demonstration of strategies for integrating marine sciences into classrooms. A marine science camp project was initiated. Fifty-four students from the 18 schools where their teachers had partaken in the training were selected. Project-based learning pedagogy was employed with these students while their teachers acted as observers. Nine student projects were presented. These projects reflect students' basic understanding of marine sciences and ability to apply the knowledge into their projects. Students' journals and self-reflection notes showed a high level of satisfaction with the use of project-based approach in learning about marine science. |

environmental conservation for schools surrounding the boundary of the Dong-Yai Wildlife Sanctuary in
Buriram province and to evaluate the curriculum so that it would have quality and be suitable for
implementation. This research was an action research prepared by the following operational steps: 1)
preparation of local curriculum development, 2) local curriculum development, and 3) curriculum evaluation.
The sample group was 37 persons from the locality consisting of the Dong-Yai Wildlife Sanctuary
administrators, forest teachers, school administrators, teachers, school committee members, educators,
community leaders and members. The statistical values i.e. mean, standard deviation, and Index of consistency
were utilized in data analysis.
The research established that the development of a local curriculum is a result of a process of
participation leading to visions, objectives, content, learning activities, measurement and evaluation, and lesson
plan of the curriculum. The result of the curriculum evaluation by the experts was that the curriculum has
components which are appropriate and related to community contexts and that it had a high level of quality
and was suitable for implementation. The experts considered that the local curriculum is highly beneficial
for curriculum implementation on natural resources and environmental conservation.
From the results of the research, it can, therefore, be concluded that the local curriculum has high
quality and is suitable for implementation in the schools surrounding the boundary of the Dong-Yai Wild
life Sanctuary. |
